In a first of its kind development for the gift card and payment industries, Thames Technology has unveiled the world’s first fully recyclable and biodegradable NFC prepaid paperboard cards.

Developed in collaboration with Holmen Board & Paper and CCL Oomph, these cards combine advanced technology with sustainability.

Thames Technology’s Pulper Zero NFC prepaid paperboard cards are currently available for closed-loop use and are awaiting approval from Visa and Mastercard for restricted and open-loop applications. These cards offer the same functionality as traditional plastic alternatives while significantly reducing environmental impact.

The eco-friendly NFC prepaid paperboard cards seamlessly integrate into diverse card applications, including gift cards and compensation cards. Fully recyclable, biodegradable, and free of plastic, they provide organisations with a practical solution for meeting environmental goals while aligning with consumer expectations for sustainable products.

Commenting on the launch, Che Colford, General Manager at Thames Technology, said:

“The introduction of Pulper Zero NFC prepaid paperboard cards highlights our commitment to driving sustainable innovation. Through our partnership with Holmen Board & Paper and CCL Oomph, we have created a product that is not only functional and durable but also meets the highest environmental standards for recyclability.

"This initiative offers a tangible step toward reducing plastic waste and embracing a more sustainable future, reinforcing Thames Technology’s dedication to promoting the use of sustainable card solutions.”

Thames Technology’s partnership with Holmen Board & Paper and CCL Oomph was instrumental in bringing this revolutionary product to market. Pulper Zero, developed by CCL Oomph, combines the Invercote board substrate from Holmen Board & Paper with a printed inlay containing no metal.

Thames Technology’s expertise in card manufacturing ensures that the cards are designed, printed and personalised to meet the specific needs of organisations and their customers. The result is a card that sets a new benchmark for both gift card and compensation cards, offering businesses and consumers an eco-friendly alternative without compromising on usability or performance.

This innovation represents a pivotal moment as the industry looks to transition away from traditional magnetic stripe cards to contactless technology.
